How does it work?
Botulinum Toxin triggers muscles to relax. It is effective in softening lines that are caused by active muscles, such as when we smile, frown, or raise our eyebrows.
It can also be used to relax muscles that are causing painful symptoms, for example, with jaw pain or TMD. It can also be used to encourage the action of muscles we want to affect, for example, to lift the brow.
What does the treatment involve?
The initial stage is a consultation and thorough assessment. Having established your needs and expectations of treatment, the administration of the Botulinum Toxin is relatively quick and painless. Treatment involves a series of very small injections, so small in fact that most patients report a pain free experience.
When will I see the results and how long will it last?
It takes 2-3 weeks for maximum effect, but you will be able to notice a difference within a few days. Results last on average about 3-4 months. After repeated treatments, the muscles become less active and sometimes decrease in strength, so results begin to last longer or less dose of Botulinum Toxin is required.
Are there any risks involved?
As with all treatments there are some risks involved, however these are minimal. The main risk, as with any form of injection, is slight swelling or bruising at the treatment site, but this is short lived and should not affect results.
Occasionally, a slight tingling sensation of the treated area may be experienced, in addition to a light headache. Again, this is rare and should not affect results. This is not an exhaustive list of potential risks, however any risks are minimised by thorough consultation, assessment and utilisation of the latest and safest techniques.
