Orthodontics is a specialist area of dentistry which covers the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatment or teeth straightening, usually involves the use of braces to correct a range of different conditions, such as:
- Crooked, prominent or gappy teeth.
- Misplaced teeth.
- Incorrect bite.
- Misaligned teeth preventing implants or other dental work

The correct ‘bite’ or position of the jaws is important at age. Misaligned teeth can cause unnecessary wear on your teeth and it can be difficult to maintain good oral hygiene.
Children & Teenagers
The permanent adult teeth begin to come through about the age of 6 and the last milk tooth is usually lost by the age of 12-13. We are happy to assess developing teeth, especially if there are problems with the bite, misplaced teeth, missing teeth or decayed teeth requiring extraction. Simple orthodontics can sometimes reduce the need for braces later, or make treatment easier.
We are able to treat a wide range of problems to a high standard, including cases that may have been declined NHS treatment. In addition to traditional fixed braces we can offer aesthetic solutions such as ceramic brackets or Invisalign™.
There is no age limit on orthodontics, providing there is good dental health. Our adult patients range from 16 to over 60. Adults may have missed out on orthodontic treatment when they were younger or may have noticed their teeth becoming more crowded with time.
Types of Braces
We offer a range of teeth straightening systems at our Harrogate practice including:
Icognito – a lingual system which fits on the back of your teeth so no one can see your are wearing braces. This system is fixed and has some really impressive results.
Treatment typically lasts 6-24 months, depending upon the problem.
the clear aligner system is hugely popular as no one need no you are wearing braces. They can be removed to make it easier to clean your teeth or eat meals and simply placed back into place without the need of a dentist. Although they are removable they do need to be worn for 20-22 hours a day in order to achieve the best results. They are ideal for less severe problems and can be worn by both teenagers and adults. Treatment typically takes take 6-18 months.
Fixed Braces – often known as “train tracks”, are small brackets attached to the front of each tooth with a dental adhesive, linked together by orthodontic wires. Fixed braces can be made of metal or aesthetic tooth-coloured ceramic. The teeth are gradually and accurately moved into position by regular adjustment. Treatment typically lasts 6-24 months, depending upon the problem.
An orthodontic assessment is required to determine the type of brace most suitable for your teeth, the costs and the estimated treatment time. We recommend all patients continue to see their general dentist for regular dental care throughout orthodontic treatment.

Retainers are an essential part of orthodontic treatment. Removable or fixed retainers are fitted once the treatment is complete to hold the teeth in the new position. Retainers are a long term commitment if you wish to maintain the result.
